Drupal.org.il New Design

Drupal.org.il, or Doil as we like to call it is the home for the Hebrew speaking Drupal CMS community developers and users.

A couple of months ago my design concept for the site was selected by the community to be the site’s new design.

So, last week we had a redesign sprint and Doil now has a fresh new design.

There are still some hiccups and glitches that need to be ironed out, and some unclosed usability issues, but the outcome is already very appealing.

The new design template is based on Tendu (of course) and a version of it will eventually become a subtheme (suprisingly, it will be called “Doil”) of Tendu.

Mac OS X – Hebrerw/English keyboard layout switch with CapsLock

I bought myself a new MacBook Pro this week (So much fun!) and I wanted to have the same keyboard layout switch I had on my Ubuntu machine – Using CapsLock, which is useless otherwise.

After googeling around I found 2 relevant results -

By a guy who created a keyboard layout for the mac where shift+ prints out an English Capital letter (like everywhere else but OSX, I never understood this choice by Apple)

The second is an application called Ukelele that is a really good keyboard layout editing software for Macs.

I then created a keyboard layout that combines both needs -

When CapsLock is off, The layout is Hebrew, and with shift+ you get English Capitals (Changed only the letters, everything else is like the Hebrew layout)

When CapsLock on – The layout is the standard English US layout.

All other Modifier keys layouts, like command+, option+ etc. are like in the Hebrew layout (for Nikud for example).

You can Download the layout from here (OS X 10.2 and up) – Heb-Eng.zip

To use it:

1. Extract the .zip to /Users/[your user name]/Library/Keyboard Layouts.
2. Log off and back on (else the layout won’t work)
3. Go to International in System Preferences and select the “Heb/Eng” Layout (It has a half US half Israel flag icon)
4. Thats it, Switch to the layout and use CapsLock to switch languages, when the light if off you are in Hebrew mode, when on in English mode.

* One drawback – In non-native apps (like Firefox) the cursor direction will always be the hebrew cursor – pointing to the left.

Tendu 2.x, Moving to Drupal

Yes! this site is still alive.

I published the next version in the evolution of Tendu, my omnipotent Drupal theme.

Many cool new features, easier to use and adopt and most importantly has some accessibility enhancements that hopefully will make some of the sites using this theme a bit more friendly to those in need.

Besides that, I’m planning on moving this site to Drupal soon.
Sorry WordPress, but I don’t need your user-friendliness anymore. I need Drupal’s power.
Muhahaha…

VLC media player 0.9.2 Icons

VLC media player 0.9.2 was released this week, featuring some icons I made for “Preferences” pane and for the “No album art” image.

A couple of years ago the VideoLan team had a redesign contest for the VideoLan website.

I posted my take on the design. Unfortunately for me my design was not picked, though it was the (very close) runner up.

The VideoLAN team approached me afterwards , told me that they really liked the icons I created for my design and asked if I can help with the icons for the upcoming 0.9 release.

It took me a while, but eventually I came up with a set of icons that I really like.

I wanted them to express the do-it-all nature of VLC and at the same time to keep a friendly feel.

It started with some rough sketches:

After some trial and error sessions I decided to go for the 3D feel.

I have no good knowledge in 3D design software so I created everything in Adobe Illustrator, using the pseudo-3D techniques it offers.

The final icons are these:

I’m really proud of these little cone guys

All the icons are released under GPL, including the source .ai files (although I never really published them, I’ll find some place to put them online if people ask me to, they are really bloated…)

And of course, kudos to the VideoLAN team for their efforts to make the best media player around even better.

The site for Icon 2008 is up, based on “Tendu”

Icon is the Annual Israeli Science Fiction, Fantasy and Role-Playing Festival.

I was part of the team who created the site, and the site is based on “Tendu”.
More accurate – “Tendu” is the evolution of the basic theme of this site.

Currently the site is only in Hebrew, but the English (and basic pages in Russian, Arabic and Klingon) will be up soon.

I published a new Drupal theme called Tendu aimed at Multi language theme developers.

Tendu is a clean and simple wireframe theme, it supports all the major browsers and most importantly, supports the “i18n” package and RTL designs out-of-the-box.

The vision is to make it easier to develop new themes that support RTL languages as well as LTR languages and help developers avoid the handful of bugs this they encounter when trying to localize an existing theme or create a new one.

I’ve put up a demo site here.
